How to use WhatsApp without a phone number

11/09/2018

When rearranging the garage in your home, you found an old smartphone that you had even forgotten you owned. After thinking about it for a few days, you decided you would not sell it and use it as a “secondary” device to surf the Internet, listen to some music and use it for Whatsapp. Regarding WhatsApp… since there is no SIM with an active phone number on this device, you’re wondering if you can actually use the famous messaging app or not.

How to use WhatsApp without a phone number

Don’t be worried: If you dedicate a few minutes of your free time to me, I can suggest some “tricks” on how to use WhatsApp without a phone number or sim, so that you can succeed. To be more specific, you can use WhatsApp even if you don’t have another phone card using the WhatsApp Web service, accessing your account from another device or even purchasing a SIM card specifically to use it for WhatsApp and other messaging services.

So, can you tell me what you still doing standing there? Make yourself comfortable, take all the time you need to focus on reading the next paragraphs and, even more importantly, implement the “tips” that I’ll give you. If you follow my suggestions step by step, you will definitely be able to access WhatsApp without a phone number in one way or another. All that’s left for me to do is to wish you enjoy your reading and above all, have fun!

 Using WhatsApp Web

Using WhatsApp WebDo you already have a WhatsApp account active and would you simply like to use it on a device that does not have a card with a different phone number? In this case you can use WhatsApp Web, which, as you may already know, allows you to access your WhatsApp account from any browser (except Internet Explorer), whether a computer, smartphone or tablet. As you may have already guessed, therefore, WhatsApp Web does not allow you to create a new account, but to “clone” an existing one.

To use the service, first open the browser (e.g. Chrome, Safari, etc.) on the device from which you want to access your WhatsApp account, link it to WhatsApp Web by the address web.whatsapp.com in the address bar at the top and turn on the desktop view of the site.

To do so on Chrome:
Click on the three dots button at the top right and select the Request desktop site icon from the menu that appears.
While on Safari:
Click on the up arrow and click on the Request desktop site icon at the bottom of the menu that appears.

From the WhatsApp app installed on your device, select WhatsApp Web in the “Settings” or ) and scan the QR code that appears on the web page opened on the device without a phone number.

Mission accomplished! 🚀

From that moment, you can also use your WhatsApp account on your “secondary” device, which does not have a card with an active phone number.

If using WhatsApp from your browser seems a bit uncomfortable, know that you can also use WhatsApp Web through some apps for Android (such as WhatsAppWeb WebLite) and iOS (such as Messenger for WhatsApp – iPad). To use them, you simply have to launch them and follow the same procedure I described above to scan your QR code and access your WhatsApp account (it is a pre-configured browser for WhatsApp Web use).

For more information on how to use WhatsApp Web, check out the more detailed information I’ve just linked. I would also like to remind you that you can download the official WhatsApp client on your computer, available both for Windows and for macOS, which makes it possible to carry out a procedure similar to the one I have just described without “inconveniencing” your browser. I talked about it in detail in the guide on how to use WhatsApp on PC, do you remember?

If you do not want to clone your WhatsApp account using the WhatsApp Web service, you can have your account on a phone number and then use it on a device that is not associated with it (such as a smartphone or tablet without SIM). Of course, when you want to access your WhatsApp account on one device, the other one will be automatically deactivated, because WhatsApp (unlike Telegram and other similar services) does not allow you to use your account on multiple devices at the same time.

Buy a SIM card for WhatsApp

ChatSimAnother solution you can consider to use WhatsApp without a phone number is to buy a SIM card for WhatsApp or one of those cards that are made to be used for the most popular instant messaging services (and therefore not only WhatsApp) at relatively low cost.

One of the most popular SIM cards in this category is ChatSim, which, as its name suggests, has been designed to facilitate the use of chat services – including WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, WeChat, LINE and many others – in more than 150 countries around the world without having to face any limitations regarding international roaming.

Before talking to you more extensively about ChatSim, I would like to tell you that using this solution is not very cheap: in fact, the card costs 15 euros to which you have to add, 5 euros for the shipping of the card and a yearly recharge of at least 10 euros that is required to obtain the necessary credits to use the service, making a total of at least 30 euros. In case you’ re wondering, if the SIM card is not recharged for 12 months or more, it’s automatically deactivated. In addition, you should take into account the fact that there are traffic thresholds that you must not exceed and it is advisable to inquire before proceeding with the purchase (for more information on this, please also consult this page).

If after carefully evaluating the “pros” and “cons” of ChatSim you decide to buy a Sim, you should know that you can order it both on the ChatSim website and on Amazon.

As soon as you receive the SIM card, you will have to activate it: to do this you must connect to this page, enter the identification number of 19 or 20 digits that is on the SIM card and the phone number associated to the ChatSim received in the appropriate text fields, tap on the green button Proceed and wait for the operation to be successful. The last step you need to perform to use the card is to insert the SIM in the special compartment on the device in which you want to use it, configure the APN following the instructions provided by ChatSim and you are ready to go.

Using a temporary number

If you want to use WhatsApp without a number, you can try using a temporary number through which you can receive the activation code of the popular instant messaging platform. If you do not know, there are online services that allow you to have disposable telephone numbers to use when activating services such as WhatsApp (if we want to make a comparison, they work more or less like those that allow you to create temporary emails).

Before explaining how best to use these services, I must inform you that the numbers provided by these services are few and, therefore, many of them have already been used for other activations of WhatsApp: this means that it is very difficult to find a working one. If despite this, you still want to try one, all you have to do is search on Google (or any other search engine), terms such as “fake phone number for verification” and, on the page that opens, find the service that seems most suited to your needs.

Warning: the websites through which you can use a temporary telephone number, do not ask you to enter your personal data to make a registration, so be aware of the portals that ask you to enter your personal data or, even, those that require money. In fact, these are probably ways of perpetrating identity theft or fraud. Understood?

After you find one of the services that enable you to get a temporary phone number, you just have to activate WhatsApp on your Android device, iPhone or Windows 10 Mobile device, enter the temporary number in the text field and click on Next. Then you go to the service page from which you took the temporary number and, if it has not been used to validate other WhatsApp accounts, you should be able to get the verification code with which to activate your account.

If you cannot find a “free” number at first stroke, you can try to find others: maybe choose (if possible) find a number that has received a few SMS and check that among the messages received if there is none containing a WhatsApp activation code. However, you should be aware that finding usable numbers for this is a very difficult task.
