How to report someone as spam on WhatsApp

In this article I’ll explain how to report someone as spam on WhatsApp so you can stop receiving their messages.

You can’t take it anymore! I certainly understand.

Spam messages on WhatsApp are constantly bothering you: you receive messages at all times of the day containing links, advertisements or promises of discounts and offers that congest the notification center of your smartphone.

You have even considered changing your number, but it is the last thing you would like to do because it is a long-standing number you have been using for a long time and you have shared it with friends, acquaintances and colleagues.

So how can you solve this problem? Nothing could be simpler!

I’ll explain shortly! In today’s guide, as a matter of fact, I will show you how to remove spam from WhatsApp, so you won’t be disturbed and overloaded with useless messages that are just a nuisance to you.

I will show you how to do this both on your smartphone, using the official WhatsApp app for Android and iOS and on your computer, using the WhatsApp desktop application for Windows and macOS and the online WhatsApp Web service.

Well, how about you start reading the tips I wrote for you in this tutorial? It will only take a few minutes of your free time to learn how to remove spam from WhatsApp.

Report or block a user

If you are constantly receiving messages on WhatsApp from unknown users that annoy you, I will recommend that you submit a report.

This will lead to you immediately blocking the user so that you will no longer receive any of their messages and reporting to WhatsApp so that they can take action to suspend the user’s account if they have violated the terms of use of this messaging service.

As an alternative to this method, to block the spam you receive on WhatsApp, you can simply block the user – an action similar to the one described in the preceding paragraphs, but which will not report the user to WhatsApp.

Android

If you have an Android smartphone, launch the WhatsApp app using its icon on your home screen or in the drawer (the screen with the list of all apps installed on your device) and select the Chat tab. Now locate the conversation with the user who is bothering you and tap on it.

Within the conversation, tap on the ⋮ icon, located at the top right and select the “More options“ > “Click on Report“ from the menu that appears. After doing so, you will see a box asking if you to confirm that you want to report the user to WhatsApp.

Before confirming this request, make sure that there is a check mark in the box next to the words Block the contact and delete messages from this chat.

At this point, you just have to tap on the “Report option” to send the report to WhatsApp and block the user. This will also delete the entire conversation.

As an alternative to the above method, you can separately report or block a user by using WhatsApp’s Block feature. To do this, open the conversation with the user who is bothering you and click on the ⋮ icon, located at the top right.

Now, in the menu that appears, select the “More options“ > “Block“. You will be prompted to choose between two options:

1. Block, to block the user without reporting them or Report
2. Block, to block the user and also send a report to WhatsApp

You can also access user reporting and blocking options through the contact information tab. To do this, you need to access the conversation and click on the phone number or username at the top. On the tab that appears, scroll through the options to locate the Block and Report Contact options.

In addition to the above procedures, when you are first contacted by a user who is not in your contact list, you can block and report directly within the conversation.

To do this, after opening the chat, click the Report button, to block and report the user to WhatsApp or click the Block button, to block the user without reporting.

iPhone

On iPhone, you can report a user as easily as in the previous paragraphs on Android.

First, launch the WhatsApp app by tapping on its home screen icon.

When you launch the app, tap on the Chat icon in the bottom bar and locate the conversation with the user who is bothering you.

After clicking on it, tap on the person’s name or the number in the top section to access the contact information.

In the tab that appears, scroll through the different options until you find the one named “Report Contact”.

From there, all you have to do is tap on this option for a new screen to appear: click on the “Report and Block” option to send the report and block the contact, so that you will no longer receive any messages from the contact and also deleting the entire conversation in the process; alternatively, tap on the Report option to only report the user.

The same procedure can be followed by tapping on the Block option in the Contact Information tab. You will have the options to Report and Block, to block the user and report them or Block, to simply block them.

As an alternative to the above methods, you can block or report a user directly from the conversation screen. When you first receive messages from a user who is not in your contact list, you will have options to restrict their interaction with you.

By pressing the Block button, as I have already explained, you will block the user so that you will no longer receive any of their messages while clicking on the Report option will block and report the user to WhatsApp.

Computer

You can also report or block a user via the WhatsApp desktop application for Windows and macOS or from WhatsApp Web (the online version of the service accessible via the browser).

For Windows, Whatsapp is available both from the Microsoft Store and via the executable; for macOS, it can be downloaded as a dmg package from the official website or as an app from the Mac App Store.

The procedure to follow is the same for all three applicable solutions.

Start the WhatsApp application using its icon on your desktop or Launchpad and if you use WhatsApp Web, go to its official Website.

Now, after logging in to WhatsApp using the QR code (I explained the procedure in detail in this guide), click on the conversation with the user who is bothering you.

After that, click on the ⋮ WhatsApp Web icon (in Windows it has the […] symbol, while in macOS it has the ▼ symbol) at the top left and select the Contact Info option in the pop-up menu. On the screen that appears, scroll through the different options and click on the one named Report Contact.

 

At this point, in the box that appears, make sure that the Block contact box is ticked and delete messages from this chat and click the Report button.

If you just want to block the user without reporting to WhatsApp, click the Block button in the Contact Info section.

Report and block a group

If you are added to a group on WhatsApp without your knowledge and receive spam messages, you can block and report the group.

Although the easiest thing to do would be to leave the group, this is not an action that can guarantee that you won’t be added to a new one or to the same one later on.

In this regard, what I would recommend you do is to first block the group administrator. To do this, access the conversation of the group you’ve been added to and tap on his/her name, located at the top.

In the tab that appears, scroll down the screen to locate the list of participating users.

When you get there, locate the contact labeled as an Administrator and tap on it. You will see a screen for user interaction, so tap Messages (on Android) or Send Message (on iOS). In the desktop version or on WhatsApp Web, simply click on the user who is the group administrator to open the chat.

After performing these steps, you simply have to block or report the administrator so as not to be added to any group managed by them. What I would recommend is that you read the previous chapter where I explained how to block a user on the different devices on which you installed WhatsApp.

Now that you have blocked the group administrator, you can simply leave the group (a procedure I have explained to you in this guide) or report them to WhatsApp. This last action not only involves reporting the group but also being able to exit and delete the conversation.

If you want to know how to report a group, I would recommend that you follow exactly the same steps as I indicated in the previous chapter, with regard to reporting an individual user. The difference is that, instead of the Report contact option, you will find the one named Report group. Easy, isn’t it?!
