Nonetheless, Halloween finds its roots in American culture (even if it was born in Ireland and exported to the United States by immigrants), it is by now widely celebrated all across the world. America and Europe aside, even in Asia, Halloween in well-known but with other names. For example, in China, the holiday is known as Teng Chieh. On this day, food and water are placed in front of the photographs family members who have passed away, while fires and lanterns are lit to illuminate the paths to the spirits as they travel to earth. Or in Hong Kong, where the celebration is known as “Yue Lan” (Festival of the hungry ghosts) and it is believed that spirits freely roam the world for 24 hours.
